The number of law firms with cyber liability insurance coverage has tripled in the last four years, and small firms are leading the surge.
In 2015, only 11 percent of firms with two to nine lawyers had cyber liability coverage, according to a recent American Bar Association survey. That percentage soared to 36 percent in 2018.
For firms with 10 to 49 attorneys, the increase was just as dramatic. In 2015, only 15 percent of those firms had cyber coverage. In 2018, the percentage was 47 percent.
Those are some of the takeaways from the first-ever ABA Profile of the Profession survey, which draws on a mountain of data to measure everything from “demographics to discipline, pay to pro bono.”
“This report is an important reference for anyone who wants to understand where the legal profession came from – and where it stands today,” writes ABA President Bob Carlson in the report’s introduction.
Some of the most interesting findings are in the area of cyber security and cyber insurance. The bottom line: cyber threats are steadily growing, and law firms are increasingly obtaining cyber insurance to protect themselves.
