About the presentation

Going Beyond Fear in Addressing Attorney Mental Health culminates a year-long effort to change the well-intentioned (and partially successful) “one size fits all” approach that the legal profession has taken to address mental health issues.  The article urges three things: (a) focusing on things we can change as opposed to things we cannot; (b) drawing lines between appropriate and inappropriate areas of institutional involvement; and (c) distinguishing between the 80 percent of population who do not have potential mental illness issues and the 20 percent who do.  The most novel or even controversial sections of the article reject current conventional wisdom on suicide and depression statistics in the profession.  It is the only article on David Foster Wallace, Pete Davidson, Bill James, the Book of Exodus, a Rolling Stone review of a Supertramp Album, and a Petula Clark song that is not “Downtown.”

Professional

Eric C. Lang began practicing law in Atlanta, Georgia 1990. His practice has been a mix of litigation and general business counseling. Mr. Lang’s career has spanned 25 states and 4 countries with great breadth: his largest court appearances have included federal securities and breach of contract cases with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, yet, he is just as comfortable representing individuals in matters with less than $100,000 at issue. He has appeared in court on legal issues such as banking law, business dissolution, breach of contract, commercial law, copyright infringement, corporate governance, fraud, insurance coverage, noncompetition/ nonsolicitation, securities and trademark infringement. Mr. Lang has recently expanded his practice beyond direct representation of clients in litigation to supporting other lawyers and law firms in their practices.

As a business consultant, Mr. Lang has helped negotiate contracts and structure a wide variety of transactions. He has negotiated employment agreements and employment termination agreements for management and executive level employees as well as their employers. His business counseling skills arise directly from his experience as a litigator.

Mr. Lang’s peers consistently ask him to speak at continuing legal education seminars, and he has spoken on a wide range of topics in the areas of contract and real estate law and litigation. He is perhaps the most-heard speaker in Georgia on mental health and the practice of law. Mr. Lang has been honored by Super Lawyers Magazine as a “Rising Star” in the legal profession for the year 2005 and a “Super Lawyer” from 2008 to 2010.

Education

Mr. Lang graduated first in his class from the University of Florida College of Law in July of 1990. While there, he was an editor of the Law Review. He received his  undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania. In his senior year, he was president of the student body.

Community / Personal

Mr. Lang is very involved at Temple Sinai in Atlanta, Georgia. He has served as a member or chair of various committees and has served a term on the Board of Trustees. He has taught in the teen and the adult education programs. In 2022 he established and administered a lay clergy program, an outgrowth of his role in such capacity for many years.

Mr. Lang also has served as an attorney-coach for The Galloway School mock trial team and served as a statewide judge for the 2021-23 mock trial season, including the finals.  During Georgia’s controversial and contentious 2020 presidential election (and the runoff thereafter as well as the 2022 gubernatorial and senatorial races), Mr. Lang was a “boiler room attorney” who addressed voter-suppression issues as they arose in real time on election day and early voting.

Mr. Lang enjoys cooking and dining out (perhaps too much so), and is a huge baseball fan.  Mr. Lang a veteran of coaching more than 25 little league teams from 2000 to 2012 at Murphey Candler Little League and is an avid collector of baseball cards, concentrating on Topps cards from 1965 to 1990. He also competes in, and hosts, trivia competitions.
