Learn the 3 main purposes of SEO.

Want to improve Search Engine Optimization for your website but don’t know where to start?

A new guide can show you how – for free.

The Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization was created by the online marketing firm Ahrefs.

“Do you find SEO daunting?” writes Joshua Hardwick, one of the Beginner Guide’s authors. “Do you lack time to learn the intricacies of this ever-changing and often puzzling field? Here’s the guide for you.”

The Beginner’s Guide “focuses on simple, low-cost and quick wins, many of which need only be done once to have a positive lasting effect,” writes Hardwick.

Four Important Facts About SEO

For more SEO basics, read the article, “A Beginner’s Guide to SEO” from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce newsletter CO.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
Answer:
“SEO is a different beast from SEM, or search engine marketing,” according to business writer Emily Heaslip in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce article. “SEO is a must-have for businesses of all sizes: it’s free and can drive more customers to your website or physical location. While SEM requires buying certain keywords, SEO is all about being thoughtful about the content you offer on the internet. Social media, listing your location on Google Maps, and linking to your site on forums like Quora and Reddit all help your SEO ranking.”

What are the three primary functions of a search engine?
Answer: Crawling (scouring the internet for the codes and content of each webpage URL); indexing (organizing the found content); and ranking (answering a search query in order of most relevant to least relevant.

How many different factors are included in Google’s algorithms?
Answer: Google utilizes more than 200 factors to index and rank webpages.

What are the most important criteria for higher rankings?
Answer: (a) relevance of content, (b) quality of content, and (c) usability, accessibility and webpage loading speed.
